If you

  • … hold a valid green card (international motor insurance card) issued for your motor vehicle by your Ukrainian insurance company or have applied for one that will be sent to you,
  • … or have taken out frontier insurance (e.g. in Poland) that is currently valid with Germany included in the coverage area.

… you do not need to take further action. You do not require frontier insurance.

Rule for passenger cars from Ukraine until 31 May 2022

The basic rule is that you are not required to hold frontier insurance until 31 May 2022, because third-party liability claims incurred by possibly uninsured Ukrainian cars in Germany will be jointly covered by German motor insurers until that date. After an accident, the injured parties will still be protected within the scope of the applicable minimum cover. This amounts to EUR 7.5 million for personal injury, EUR 1.22 million for property damage and EUR 50,000 for financial losses.

Frontier insurance for vehicles (private and commercial) from Ukraine, commencing from 1 June 2022

If you are Ukrainian coming to Germany in a Ukrainian-insured vehicle and none of the criteria listed under A. apply to you, then you will need frontier insurance.

The registration exemption is being extended for a further 6 months. Not all Federal States [Bundesländer] have signed up to this (e.g. Rhineland-Palatinate and Bremen), so a query should be filed with the local regulatory authorities in each individual case. If an exemption does exist, then a 6-month frontier insurance contract can again be concluded. If this is not the case, then a regular registration must be arranged. In this situation, we can offer motor vehicle insurance through our local Allianz agents or online with an eVB (electronic certificate of insurance) for a vehicle registration number.
  • Where can I obtain frontier insurance?

You can arrange frontier insurance with any Allianz agent anywhere in Germany.

Note: If you experience difficulties in communicating in the place you find yourself, a Ukrainian-speaking Allianz employee may be able to assist you by telephone.

  • What does the Allianz frontier insurance cover?

The scope of coverage is the statutory minimum for motor vehicle third party insurance.

Motor vehicle third party insurance covers loss and damages you cause to others with the insured vehicle. This amounts to EUR 7.5 million for personal injury, EUR 1.22 million for property damage and EUR 50,000 for financial losses.

  • How long will the frontier policy coverage be valid and how much will it cost?

The frontier insurance policy is concluded for a period of 6 months. Upon conclusion with your local contact person, you will receive a corresponding insurance confirmation directly. This is valid as proof of insurance.

The one-time premium depends on the vehicle category:

    • For privately used vehicles (e.g. car or motorcycle), the one-time premium is EUR 199.00 including insurance tax
    • For vehicles used for business purposes (e.g. delivery vans or trucks), the one-time premium is EUR 398.00 including insurance tax

You pay the premium in cash. The insurance certificate will then be issued to you immediately. This certificate is valid as documentary proof of insurance.

  • What details do you need to provide to us for the frontier insurance?

    • the registration number of your vehicle
    • the vehicle identification number (VIN) of your vehicle
    • the type and make of the vehicle (e.g. passenger car, Volkswagen)
  • Where am I insured (scope of the frontier insurance)?

Insurance coverage is provided within the geographical borders of Europe and in non-European areas in which the European Union has jurisdiction.
  • How do I find the nearest Allianz agent?

  • What will happen at the end of the 6-month insurance cover?

The insurance cover can be renewed once for a further 6 months. After 12 months, you must register your vehicle in Germany and your vehicle should be insured under a standard motor vehicle insurance policy. Under certain conditions, you can apply for an exemption from your competent authority under state law, so that you may continue to drive in Germany beyond the 12 months with a KH limit insurance policy until 31.03.2024.

Information on this can be found at:

If you subsequently continue to insure your vehicle with Allianz, the amount you paid for the last frontier policy you received will be credited once to the new policy.
